Could a Solar Installation Make You Famous?

solar stories in the mediaOur recent #SolarChat with expert panelists Carter Lavin, business development manager of the Solar Marketing Group and Jessica F. Lillian, editor of Solar Industry Magazine, was especially enlightening, as the topic was focused on solar energy and mainstream media outreach.

By the end of the first question, it was pretty clear that local media is open to hearing about exciting “solar stories” in their region. We asked our panelists and attendees: What was the best solar story you’ve seen lately? In which mainstream news outlets do you find the fairest coverage of solar?

Panelist Lavin commented: “Local media is what a lot of your customers read. Better audience targeting = better results.”

@SolSolution tweeted: “Local papers are so excited to hear about solar school installations we have going up.”
Lillian, tweeting under the handle @SolarIndustry, said: “If a solar story involves a familiar local business, it’s more attractive to the community.”

Let the Sun Shine on the News
With all the negative coverage in newspapers, TV and on the Web, journalists are eager for feel-good stories. If those stories have an eco-friendly angle, all the better. And since, in past surveys, people have said they like solar energy more than puppies, you can’t get much more “feel-good” than a successful, money-saving solar installation.

The Solar Industry Needs You
So what’s the best thing the solar industry can do for its customers and for the planet? Promote success stories.
Now, don’t misunderstand us: Investing in solar panels probably won’t make you famous. (Although if you’re already famous and you start looking into solar energy, that might just make the news!) But if you’re proud of your choice (and what’s not to be proud of when you make a wise financial decision like a solar PV installation?) and you’re looking for a little bit of acclaim, it shouldn’t be hard to achieve a cover story in your local or even regional newspaper, a blog post on local Patch or Examiner pages, or thousands of hits on a solar tour of your home posted on a YouTube channel.

If none of this matters to you, or you want anonymity, any solar installer will promise exactly that. But with your permission, according to the consensus at our most recent #SolarChat, the solar industry wants to share your story — and your solar installer should make it as easy as possible for you.

To answer the question posed in our title: Yes, a solar installation can give you your 15 minutes of fame, if you want it to. And, if you don’t, client confidentiality can be assured. But one of the exciting things about a solar PV installation, after the reduced electric bills, of course, is knowing how you’re preserving our planet’s natural resources and reducing pollution, knowing that you’re truly making a difference in the future of our planet.

If you want to share that knowledge, those good feelings, with the world, as a solar homeowner, you are the perfect one to do it. Your solar installer, SEIA, or the Solar Marketing Group can help you. These people and organizations have the passion, connections, and the motivation. All they need is your solar story.

Will you reach out and share?
